AREA HOTELS

AREA OVERVIEW

The diversely scenic Sonoma Coast is one of the most visually stunning landscapes in all of California, and hotels in Sonoma, CA reflect the natural beauty of the area. The Timber Cove Inn is in just the right spot to experience all that this remarkable area offers. Panoramic views are punctuated by redwood forests, old-growth viticulture and orchards, and a craggy coastline with natural arches, secluded coves, and long sandy beaches.

The towns of Sonoma, Guerneville, Healdsburg and Santa Rosa offer upscale boutique shopping, art galleries, nationally-reviewed restaurants, tasting rooms, and spas — many centered on picturesque town squares. Take a hot air balloon ride, walk on the beach, or play golf at one of more than 20 golf courses in the county.

Ecotourism is popular, but the history of the land may be best expressed at the Armstrong Redwoods State Park where you can gaze at a 1400-year-old tree—the oldest known redwood in Sonoma County. You can also experience the wild side at Safari West, enjoying a safari through terrain filled with African animals, wine, music and dance. A series of nearby beaches separated by rock bluffs and headlands, extends 17 miles from Bodega Head to Vista Trail located 4 miles north of Jenner. Beachcombers, fishermen, sunbathers and picnickers can access the beach from more than a dozen points along coast Highway 1.

AREA ATTRACTIONS

  • The Russian River

Sonoma County’s largest waterway is the Russian River, where five miles of pristine and verdant scenery yields glimpses of turtles, osprey, deer, herons and other wildlife. The Russian River is the perfect spot for day-tripping canoeists and kayakers, and rentals are available in Duncan’s Mills. Music lovers will enjoy the popular Russian River Jazz Festival in September and the Russian River Blues Festival in June.

  • Bodega Bay

One of the state’s largest fishing fleets is headquartered in the coastal town of Bodega Bay. The headland that forms the harbor entrance offers unforgettable views and if time allows, you’ll enjoy horseback riding on the beach, deep sea fishing or a challenging game of golf on the Scottish course at Bodega Harbour Golf Links.

  • Fort Ross State Historic Park

Built by Russian fur traders in the early 1800s, Fort Ross is known for its unique architecture and immensely beautiful surroundings. Many of the original buildings were destroyed by fire, but have been authentically recreated. The wooden compound includes a Russian Orthodox chapel, stockade, blockhouse, and barracks (all restored), as well as the original buildings of the 1836 Rotchev House, cemetery, and orchard. Explore the cove below, where Russians once constructed boats made from redwood or fir. By the way, the name "Ross" is thought to be a version of "Rossiya," the Russia of Tsarist days.

  • Wineries

Wine is perhaps the thing for which the Sonoma area is most well-known. With its beginnings at Fort Ross in 1812, the wine-making heritage in Sonoma has come full circle, with wine grapes making up three fourths of all agricultural production in the county. The area wineries and vineyards are worth the visit to the Sonoma Coast region, and tours and tastings are a pleasant way to spend any afternoon. Take a sip and cycle excursion with one of three tour companies that provide the perfect experience. You can also enjoy a picnic at one of 45 winery picnic grounds or tour one of many wine caves throughout the county. Among the Sonoma, California, hotels near wineries, the Timber Cove Inn offers upscale accommodations.
